South Africa's coastline offers some of the world's most spectacular driving routes, from the Garden Route's mountain passes to KwaZulu-Natal's dramatic coastal roads. But our coastal conditions – salt air, humidity, temperature changes, and varying road qualities – demand proper preparation to ensure your trip remains memorable for the right reasons.

Pre-trip mechanical inspection Check tire tread depth and pressure – coastal roads often feature steep gradients and sudden weather changes. Ensure your spare tire is properly inflated and your jack functions correctly. Have your brakes inspected, especially if you'll be driving mountain passes where overheating is common.
Protect against salt damage Coastal air contains salt that accelerates corrosion. Apply a protective wax coating to exposed metal parts, and consider treating wheel wells with anti-rust spray. If possible, avoid parking directly on the beach – sand and salt are particularly damaging to undercarriage components.
Prepare for temperature variations Coastal areas experience dramatic temperature swings. Ensure your cooling system is topped up and functioning correctly. Pack extra coolant and oil, especially for older vehicles. Test your air conditioning system – it works harder in humid conditions.
Pack emergency supplies Include extra water (for both drinking and the radiator), basic tools, jumper cables, and a first-aid kit. Coastal areas often have limited cell coverage, so prepare for self-sufficiency. A portable air compressor can be invaluable for adjusting tire pressure on different road surfaces.
Plan your route and stops Research fuel stations along your route – some coastal areas have limited options. Download offline maps in case of poor signal areas. Identify reliable mechanics in major towns along your route.
Post-trip maintenance After returning, wash your car thoroughly, paying special attention to the undercarriage. Salt residue continues damaging metal components long after your trip ends.

Proper preparation ensures your coastal adventure becomes an annual tradition rather than a cautionary tale about breakdown costs.
