Toyota GR Supra Review – A Proper Sports Car

By Jeffrey Mills

Big thanks to WesBank, Cars.co.za and Panthera Media for inviting us to their Evaluation Day. The Toyota GR Supra is one of the finalists in the Performance Car segment alongside the BMW M2 Competition and Ford Mustang of the Cars Awards. Head over to Cars.co.za to see the other cars in the different categories and vote for the one you think is best.

One of the most controversial cars in the motoring world has been the fifth-generation Toyota Supra. The car has divided opinion across the world from the way that it looks, to its internal components, to how the car was developed. The most critical aspect of the car, which is often over-looked, is how the car performs. This is where the GR Supra earns the praise it deserves!

Equipped with the 3.0 Litre inline-six B58 motor, pumping out 250 kW of power and 500 Nm of torque, the Supra manages 0-100 KM/H in an impressive 4.3 Seconds. The car is only available with an 8-speed automatic gearbox which is a contentious topic, is by no means a deal-breaker. With good quality leather and carbon-effect trim, all be it a bit cramped, the cabin is a pleasing place to be in.

When assessing the looks of the GR Supra, pictures can never do it justice. With a true sports car setup of having a long bonnet and short-wheel base, something not common at this price point, it is something to appreciate. The car has enticing body lines with relatively wide curves, a double-bubble roof and striking front and rear lights, the car is a real head-turner.

From a driving point of view, the car has a dual personality. It is very comfortable and usable for a car in this segment when cruising about. When driven in a more fashion, it really shows how capable it is and then some. The car sits quite low and hugs the road when going around a corner. With fairly limited body roll and good throttle response, it inspires confidence in the driver. It may not be the fastest or most powerful car around but it does what a sports car should and that’s to make driving enjoyable.
